中国现代化的国家目标是：在2050年前后，达到世界中等发达国家水平，基本实现现代化；在21世纪末，达到世界先进水平，全面实现现代化。2001年是中国现代化第三步战略的起点，也是公元第三千年的纪元。从2001年开始出版的《中国现代化报告》是一个年度系列报告，每年报告的主题不同。每年报告的出版，都引起广泛关注。这本报告概要包含2001年至2010年的10本《中国现代化报告》的综述和目录、2006年世界和中国现代化指数、现代化与人类文明的关系、人类文明进程的长江模式等内容。本书反映了《中国现代化报告》的主要结果和观点，可供国内外关心中国现代化、研究现代化的人士参考。《中国现代化报告》坚持科学性、创新性、战略性和建设性的特点，系统探索世界现代化的基本事实和基本原理，理性分析中国现代化的基本特点和合理路径，研究范围包括过去300年的世界现代化进程和131个国家的现代化评价。目前中国现代化报告的内容包括现代化趋势、现代化评价、现代化理论、经济现代化、社会现代化、文化现代化、生态现代化、地区现代化、国际现代化和世界现代化等。
