本书主要是针对移动动词的研究，采用定量分析与定性研究相结合的方法。通过对20部中英小说中描述移动事件的例句进行随机抽样以及对4部英汉常用工具书中的移动动词进行调查，建立语料库。定量研究主要是对语料中英汉移动动词所反映的词汇化模式进行统计分析，以确定汉语移动动词词汇化模式所反映的典型类型。定性研究主要以定量分析的结果为基础对英汉移动动词的词汇化模式进行对比，探讨它们之间的共性和差异及其成因。在此基础上对Talmy理论中有关汉语移动动词词汇化模式类型的部分观点作出适当的修正。
