Afterthepublicationofhistwo-volumeAHistoryofChinesePhilosophy(t930-t936),FungturnedhisinteresttotheattempttocreateamodernsystemofChinesephilosophy,thereaftersuccessivelypublishingsixbooksabouthisNeo-Confucianism.ThenhereturnedagaintothestudyofthehistoryofChinesephilosophyandwroteinEnglishAShortHistoryofChinesePhilosophy(1946-1947).Theexperienceofcreatinghisownphilosophicalsystemmadehimmorepenetratingincomprehensionandmoreexplicitinexpressionthanhewaswhenpreparinghislargehistory.InordertomeettheneedofWesternreaders,heoftenexplainedChinesephilosophyincomparisonwithWesternphilosophy.Fromthisphilosophicalcomparisonhecametoasocialconclusion:"Inordertoliveinamodernworld,Chinahastobemodernized."HisShortHistorywaspublishedbyMacmillanCompanyin1948,followedbyFrench,ItalianandYugoslavic,versionstranslatedfromtheEnglishoriginal.
