中国和西方国家有着不同的文明和不同的制度。改革开放以来，中国逐步建立起一套符合国情的政治、经济和社会制度，并取得有目共睹的成就。但是同时，面对不同的制度文明，中国始终怀着开放、谦虚和包容的心态。正是基于这种大背景之下，本项目以“制度文明对话”为主题，邀请美国康奈尔大学教授卡赞斯坦、伦敦政治经济学院研究员马丁·雅克、日内瓦外交与国际关系学院教授张维为、香港中文大学教授王绍光、台湾大学教授朱云汉等中外思想精英20余人，共议人类社会发展中所遇到的普遍性、深层次制度问题，并且在深入研究讨论中国制度文明特点及未来发展方向的基础上，总结了中国特色社会主义制度在经济、政治建设和党的建设等领域的作用，对中国今后制度建设应把握的原则及重点提出了意见和建议，形成了对中国制度建设具有参考借鉴意义的研究成果。
