郑绵平院士有1956年迄今致力于盐湖资源与环境与盐类沉积调查研究，计发表论文240余篇。《中国盐湖和盐盆地沉积研究（英文版）》仅选录了自1983年以来23篇论文（主要为英文），内容涵盖盐湖学与盐体系、中国盐湖资源与水化学、矿物学、盐湖沉积与古气候和高原隆升，盐湖地质生态学与“盐湖农业”以及中国盐盆地分布与找钾新认识和研究进展等论述以及火星盐类沉积作用的探讨。
