　　Thepaceofadvancesincomputersimulationscontinuesunabated.ThisSecondEditionofourguidetoMonteCarlosimulationsupdatessomeofthereferencesandincludesnumerous-additions.Newtextdescribesalgorithmicdevelopmentsthatappearedtoolateforthefirsteditionor,insomecases,wereexcludedforfearthatthevolumewouldbecometoothick.Nonetheless,theolderworkoftenprovidesvaluablepedagogicalinformationforthestudentandmayalsobemorereadablethanmorerecent,andmorecompact,papers.Anadditionaladvantageisthatthereadercaneasilyreproducesomeoftheolderresultswithonlyamodestinvestmentofmoderncomputerresources.WehavealsoaddedabriefnewchapterthatprovidesanoverviewofsomeareasoutsideofphysicswheretraditionalMonteCarlomethodshavemadeanimpact.Lastly,afewmisprintshavebeencorrected,andwethankourcolleaguesforpointingthemout.　　ThisnewandupdateddealswithallaspectsofMonteCarlosimulationofcomplexphysicalsystemsencounteredincondensed-matterphysicsandstatisticalmechanicsaswellasinrelatedfields,forexamplepolymerscience,latticegaugetheoryandproteinfolding.　　Afterbrieflyrecallingessentialbackgroundinstatisticalmechanicsandprobabilitytheory,theauthorsgiveasuccinctoverviewofsimplesamplingmethods.Thenextseveralchaptersdeveloptheimportancesamplingmethod,bothforlatticemodelsandforsystemsincontinuumspace.Theconceptsbehindthevarioussimulationalgorithmsareexplainedinacomprehensivefashion,asarethetechniquesforefficientevaluationofsystemconfigurationsgeneratedbysimulation(histogramextrapolation,multicanonicaisampling,Wang-Landausampling,thermodynamicintegrationandsoforth).Thefactthatsimulationsdealwithsmallsystemsisemphasized.Thetextincorporatesvariousfinitesizescalingconceptstoshowhowacarefulanalysisoffinitesizeeffectscanbeausefultoolfortheanalysisofsimulationresults.OtherchaptersalsoprovideintroductionstoquantumMonteCarlomethods,aspectsofsimulationsofgrowthphenomenaandothersystemsfarfromequilibrium,andtheMonteCarloRenormalizationGroupapproachtocriticalphenomena.Abriefoverviewofothermethodsofcomputersimulationisgiven,asisanoutlookfortheuseofMonteCarlosimulationsindisciplinesoutsideofphysics.Manyapplications,examplesandexercisesareprovidedthroughoutthebook.Furthermore,manynewreferenceshavebeenaddedtohighlightboththerecenttechnicaladvancesandthekeyapplicationsthattheynowmakepossible.　　Thisisanexcellentguideforgraduatestudentswhohavetodealwithcomputersimulationsintheirresearch,aswellaspostdoctoralresearchers,inbothphysicsandphysicalchemistry.Itcanbeusedasatextbookforgraduatecoursesoncomputersimulationsinphysicsandrelateddisciplines.
