本教材分为两册，每册由10个单元组成，供学生一学年使用。每单元由四大板块组成：General Reading，Special Purpose Reading，Test-based Reading and Pleasure Reading。General Reading选取人文、地理、文学、语言、文化、法律、经贸、名人演讲、高科技、社会焦点等不同领域的材料，以培养学生的阅读兴趣和习惯，同时扩大其词汇量为目的。鉴于自主学习之特点，文章长度将控制在1200ws左右。Special Purpose Reading旨在通过英语应用文和学术论文各组成部分的读物，培养学生的英语应用文和英语学术论文写作能力。如：如何写摘要、引言、文献综述等；应用文阅读指如何作开幕词、闭幕词、写合同、报道等方面的阅读。Test-based Reading 部分旨在训练学生阅读速度，为应战各种英语考试。Pleasure Reading部分旨在让学生在其它三个板块学习结束时，读读美文佳作，妙趣横生的幽默小故事，倍感英语学习的愉悦和轻松。本教材设计讲求创新性。我们突破以往的阅读教材的编排系统和结构体例，以研究生的研究学习需求和以英语为工具获取本专业知识的目的为切入点，以语言能力与就业准备为价值取向，以学习者的兴趣为背景，以普通阅读为基础、学术、应用文阅读为导向、考试阅读为相关链接、娱乐阅读为基本板块，从而搭建课程内容通向学生职业生涯的桥梁。在教材编写中，大量吸收了现代教材编写的新理论和新成果，力求做到内容新、体例新。本教材集普通阅读、应用文阅读、学术阅读、基于考试的阅读和娱乐性阅读为一体，是一种大胆的尝试，也是一种有益的探索，她将把研究生英语阅读教材的编写引向一个新的方向。
