作者介绍:

In a former career,Todd Nestor was trained as a Chinese Linguist.It was there that his interest with the Orient in general and China in particular really began to develop.After learning the language from native Chinese speakers he traveled to China where he spent time traveling and getting to know the culture and the people of this great nation.During all his time traveling it was Beijing that was his home.He spent some time traveling to other places:Tibet,Hong Kong,Shaanxi,Qinghai,Gansu,and Hebei to name a few;but it was always Beijing that he went back to,and where his home was.He has previously worked with the Foreign Language Press writing three articles about Nanjing in addition to proofreading translations of cultural works.Besides his interest in China,Mr.Nestor has always had an interest in technology.It is because of this interest that he studied software engineering in addition to Chinese and currently works as a softare engineer.He has worked on many projects as a software engineer both open source and private.In his personal time Mr.Nestor enjoys traveling to new places,hiking,biking,kayaking,and camping.He has traveled to many countries in Europe and the Americas which has helped him develop his unique perspectiv of the world.

During my fifst trip to Beijing I gradually started to see why this city is so important on the global stage as a cultural and political center, an economic powerhouse, and a microcosm of all that is Chinese. Of course, just as you need to understand where a person has come from to truly be able to know that person and take a guess at where he is going, we first need to understand some of Beijing's tustory, so that is where we will start, We will talk about the history briefly; I'll do my best to present it in an entertaining way so that you won't fall asleep on me. Moving on from the history we will go into present Beijjng, descfibing the look, feel, and layout of the ciry, but we will also touch on what it's Iike to live here and be a part of the city.
