前言

HansChristianAndersensFairyTalesareknownandlovedbyadultsandchildrenalike.Thefirstvolumecontainingfourstoriesappearedin1835,andbytheendofhislifehehadpublishedatotalof156tales.Despitetheauthorsdeclarationthathewouldhavepreferredtobeknownforhispoemsandnovels,itisfortheseimaginativetalesthatheisremembered.AndersenwasborninOdensein1805,thesonofapoorshoemakerandasimplepeasantwoman.Hisfatherdiedwhenhewas11andattheageof14hesetouttoseekfameandfortuneasanactorinCopenhagen.ForthreeyearshewashelpedbyvariouspatronsfromscholarstotheKinghimself,andat17hewassenttoschoolasaStateprotege.Oncehehadpassedhisexaminationshechosetowrite,becomingeventually,andaftermanyhard-shipsandhumiliations,Denmarksmostillustriousson,fetedallovertheworld.Hisautobiography,whichhebeganasearlyas1832,wasentitledTheFairytaleofMyLife.HansAndersendiedin1875.NAOMILEWISisacriticandwriter,andexpertonHansAndersensworks.ShehaseditedseveralvolumesofchildrensstoriesincludingcollectionsoffairytalesbyAndersenandthebrothersGrimm.HerbooksincludeAPeculiarMusic(aboutthepoemsofEmilyBronte),Fantasy(forTheNationalBookLeague)，AFootprintontheAir，TheSilentPlaymate(ananthologyofdollliterature}，andthePuffinHansChristianAndersen，anewtranslationoftwelvestorieswithintroductionandnotes．ShereceivedtheEleanorFarjeonAwardfordistinguishedservicestoChildren’Sliterature．L．W．KingslandisaretiredheadmasterandtranslatorofScandinavianliterature．
