Theessavscollectedinthisvolume.alloriginallywrirteninEnglishforanon-Chineseaudience,aretakenfromthosewritingsofFungYu-lanthatarerelativelyfar-reachingandconcise.Asawhole.FungswritingsaretheresultofcontactbetveenEasternandwestemculturesandofthemodernizationofChinesephilosophY.Heinvestigatedphilosophyinthelightofallofitsculturalmanifestations,takingtheproblemoflifeashisfocus.AlongsuchatrendandundertheguidanceofProfessorJohnDewey,hecompletedhisdoctoraldissertation."AComparativeStudyofLifeIdeals"atColumbiaUniversityin1923(publishedin1924).TheworkpresentstheyoungauthorsachievementsinhisendeavourtohaveathoroughknowledgeofbothWesternandChinesephilosophiesandtheirlifeidealsandtopursuethehighestidealoflifeashesawit. Afterthepublicationofhistwo-volumeAHistoryofChinesePhilosophy(t930-t936),FungturnedhisinteresttotheattempttocreateamodernsystemofChinesephilosophy,thereaftersuccessivelypublishingsixbooksabouthisNeo-Confucianism.ThenhereturnedagaintothestudyofthehistoryofChinesephilosophyandwroteinEnglishAShortHistoryofChinesePhilosophy(1946-1947).Theexperienceofcreatinghisownphilosophicalsystemmadehimmorepenetratingincomprehensionandmoreexplicitinexpressionthanhewaswhenpreparinghislargehistory.InordertomeettheneedofWesternreaders,heoftenexplainedChinesephilosophyincomparisonwithWesternphilosophy.Fromthisphilosophicalcomparisonhecametoasocialconclusion:"Inordertoliveinamodernworld,Chinahastobemodernized."HisShortHistorywaspublishedbyMacmillanCompanyin1948,followedbyFrench,ItalianandYugoslavic,versionstranslatedfromtheEnglishoriginal.
