Ancient people created festivals as a way of thanking their gods for keeping them safe. You will find these types of festivals still held today throughout the world. For example, the Sioux people of North Dakota hold a Sun Dance every summer. They give thanks to Wakan Taka, the Great Spirit, for help that they have received in times of trouble, illness,or danger.Facing the sun,the Sioux dance for up to four days,non-stop,without food or water. Many festivals show respect to the sun and other natural wonders. The Inti Raymi Festival is held on the winter solstice(冬至),the shortest day of the year. The Quechua people who live in Peru honor Inti, their sun god. They show their thanks to the life-giving energy of the sun by blowing it kisses.
