Maathai was active in the National Council of Women of Kenya(NCWK) and was its chairwoman from 1981 to 1987.In 1977 she introduced the idea of asking ordinary people to plant trees,beginning with her planting trees in her backyard.She developed the idea into a movement called the Green Belt Movement(GBM) in 1977.Its main activity is to have women plant trees to protect the environment,and at the same time improve their quality of life.Through this movement,Maathai has helped women plant more than 30 million trees on their farms and at schools and churches across Kenya and other African countries.
