Because more and more people travel with hand luggage only, they can look for new, stylish destinations where they can hang out, eat and buy new stuff to remind themselves and their friends of how stylish they are.

　　But why Helsinki? Isn't the city cold, expensive and dull? Cold, yes. So cold that they heat the pavement in winter, but that's where the bad news ends. Helsinki is cheaper than almost any other major European capital, and there is more than enough to do to fill a long weekend.

　　Buses and trams cost pennies, and bicycles are free. But the best way to see the city is on foot. The Viking Line cruise groups stick to the traditional sightseeing walkabout, the Lutheran Church, Sibelius's home and the fish and meat market on the docks.

　　Across from the Klub bar is Teatteri, a restaurant designed by Briton Rupert Gardner. No place better illustrates the change Helsinki has undergone.
