Teaching procedures1:
Before you start
Exercise 1:
Read the Strategies with the class and ask students which of these strategies they use in English. Ask them if they use any of these strategies in their own language.
Ask students in what ways can these strategies make
communication more effective.
Exercise 2:
Students work in pairs, completing the Function File with words from the list.
Students then listen to the cassette and check their answers.
Students then read the dialogue in pairs.

Stages 1-2:
Students work in pairs discussing the second photograph.
Read through the stages and the example language for each stage with the class so that students are clear about the activity.
Students use the Key Words in the Warm-up and in Lesson 2 to describe the people in the photograph. The pairs work together making notes about the people.
Students take turns to comment about the photo, speculating about the situation and the people.
Talkback:
Students form groups of four and exchange ideas about the photo.
The groups then report back to the class and find out how many different ideas they had.
