Language focus

1. (Page 38 Lines 1-2) The Chinese language differs from Western languages in that, instead of an alphabet, it uses characters which stand for ideas, objects or deeds.

▶ in that ... 原因在于......；因为

e.g. I'm in a slightly awkward position in that he's not arriving until the 10th.

(1) He differs from his classmates in that he devotes his spare time to reading (在于他将闲暇时间都用来阅读了).

(2) I know nothing about him except that he comes from America (除了他来自美国).

(3) We may depend/ rely/ count/ lean on it that (相信，指望) next year is going to be a year of changes.

(4) Please see to it that/ make sure that (确保) the door is locked before you leave.

2. (Page 38 Lines 15-16) This became one mountaintop and three lines, and over time turned into the character used nowadays.

▶ turn into 变成

如果加热的话，冰会变成水。(使用省略结构) If heated, ice will turn into water.

turn off 关掉 turn on 打开

turn up 调高；出现，露面 turn down 调低；拒绝

turn out 结果是......, 证明是...... turn to sb. (for help) 向某人求助

turn in 上交（作业等） turn over 把......翻过来，仔细思量

【考点训练】

(1) He was disappointed to find his suggestions turned down (被拒绝).

(2) We wanted to get home before dark, but it didn't quite turn out as planned (结果像计划那样).

3. (Page 38 Line 17) Not all characters were developed from drawings of objects.

(Page 39 Line 2) However, this is not always true.

【用法提示】

部分否定：all/ both/ every-合成词/ each/ always/ entirely/ completely/ altogether/ all the time与not连用。

e.g.: All birds cannot fly, the ostrich, for example.

The businessman is never to be entirely trusted.

全部否定：neither /none /nothing/ nobody/ no one
