An airport is one of the busiest places in the world, for all day and nearly all night jet airliners take off and land at peak periods at the rate of one a minute.

　　Airports have three main jobs: they must carry passengers, mail, and goods; they must be sure that all aircrafts take off and land safely and on time; and they must provide hangars (飞机库) and workshops _______________________.

　　The centre of operations at the airport is the air traffic control tower, where controllers organize the landing and take-off of each aircraft. With complicated electronic aids, including computers and radar, the ground controller guides the pilot of the aircraft from a height of 6 to 8 km onto a concrete (混凝土) runway about 3km long and 60 meters wide. The runways are usually parallel and in line with the prevailing (主要的) wind, so that aircraft can land against the wind, which is always safer. As soon as aircraft has landed, it moves along to an area called an apron (停机坪). Here trucks are waiting, ready to carry baggage to the terminal. Fuel tankers move in to refill the craft's fuel tanks.
