That question is on the minds of many food experts and nutritionists.The food we eat should help us grow and develop properly.Nutritionists study food to see if it is healthful or nutritious.
What we eat at lunch can satisfy about onethird of our daily food needs.So experts are studying school lunches.They believe that a healthful lunch should have many of the nutrients a student needs.A nutrient is the part of a food used by the body for growth and energy.Protein,fats,carbohydrates,vitamins,minerals,and calories,or food energy,are examples of nutrients.
Not all foods contain the same amount or kind of nutrients.Calories supply your body with energy.Protein is used by your body to replace and build new cells.Vitamins help you to grow.Vitamin D keeps bones healthy.Minerals,such as iron,move oxygen through the body.
Nutritionists have learned that too much fat,sugar,and salt is not good for you.School dietitians
keep this in mind when they plan the lunch menu.But even a wellbalanced lunch will not nourish the student who just does not eat.So nutritionists are looking for ways to make school lunches taste better.Some school dietitians are adding nutrients to favorites such as pizza,tacos,and milkshakes.
