Pakistani pride
A boldly painted youth cheers for independence in front of the national flag in Wagah, a Pakistani town near India. The Proclamation of Indonesian Independence on August 17th, 1945 threw the country into four years of war with the Netherlands, which Indonesia won in 1949. Celebratory customs include the release of hundreds of green turtles (海龟) into the ocean from Bali's Kuta Beach, and panjat pinang, a game in which a pole is set up, covered with oily clay (黏土) and hung with bicycles, televisions and other prizes. Whoever climbs all the way to the top wins, though people often work together to split the prize.

After protesters took to Bogota's streets on July 20th, 1810, the Spanish governor acknowledged a limited independence that eventually gave way to full sovereignty (主权) in 1819.
