　1. attempt

【课文原句】

Many famous geographers have attempted to define the discipline in a few short words. (Page 67)

attempt为及物动词，意为"试图；企图；尝试"，后常接名词、代词或动词不定式。例如：

I didn't attempt the last question in the exam.

She attempted to get in touch with her partner.

【拓展】

attempt还可以作名词，意为"企图；试图；尝试"。常与动词make搭配使用，make an attempt to do sth. / at sth. / at doing sth. 例如：

He failed in his attempt to finish his homework on time.

His first attempt at English composition was poor.

I made an attempt at winning the first prize in the contest.

若attempt后接介词on，即attempt on sb. / sb's life，意为"杀人企图"。例如：

Someone has made attempt on the life of the President.

2. anxious
