  Option Two

1)Read through the words and have students repeat them after you. Pay attention to those words which don't have the stress on the first syllable: attractive, industrial, polluted.

2)Ask students to discuss the meanings in pairs and then come up with a list of the positive features. Then call back their answers in a whole class setting and make a list on the blackboard.

  2. Activity Two

1)Divide the whole class into five groups according to their choice. They are then required to describe the city they have chosen. Their description should cover as many words in Activity One as they can.

2)A representative from each group reports in a whole class setting.

  Sample descriptions:

New York is a modern and wealthy industrial city, and it is busy and crowded although not very dirty.

Beijing is the economic and political centre of our country. It is an attractive city with a lot of beautiful buildings.

My hometown is on the bank of the Yellow River. It is very poor now, but I make up my mind to work hard to make it wealthy and attractive.

  3. Activity Three

1)Offer three pairs of cities for students to choose from and then divide them into four groups according to their choices. The three pairs of cities can be as follows: Beijing & Shanghai; London & Barcelona; Florence & New York. You may ask them to discuss the following aspects of the cities: population, industry, climate, location, transport, tourism in groups and then try to fill in the form.
