  [点津] pay off表示"得到回报"时,是不及物动词短语,无被动语态,且一般用表示事物的名词作主语;表示"偿清"时,是及物动词短语,可用于被动语态。

  pay sb. for sth. 因某事物给某人报酬

  pay back 偿还(欠款);报答;报复

  ③He had to work part­time so as to pay for his education.

  他必须做兼职工作来支付学费。

  ★主句中时间状语then放到了句首,句子使用了完全倒装结构。完全倒装的常见情况:

  (1)out, in, into, down, up, away, here, now, then, there等表示方位和时间的副词和表示地点的介词短语置于句首,且主语是名词时,句子用完全倒装。

  ①For a moment nothing happened. Then came voices all shouting together.

  有一段时间什么也没发生,然后传来了大家的喊叫声。

  ②Into the dark apartment walked David, who was quite surprised when everyone shouted Happy Birthday.

大卫走进了黑暗的房间,当大家喊生日快乐时,他感到很惊讶。
