T: Good morning, everyone! What do you think is the most important in our life?

T: Why do you think so?
(I will pick up three students to answer this question)
T: Which one is healthy or unhealthy?
(Then I will show them some pictures) Arouse students' interest in the topic of this Unit Proverbs appreciation
(Show some proverbs on health on the screen) Enrich the students' knowledge Step2
Lead-in (3-4min) T: Which kind of life do you want to live?
(I will show a picture with an old man cycling and another picture with a teenager smoking.)
T: Do you think smoking is healthy or unhealthy?
(show pictures with people smoking )
S: Unhealthy.
T: Have you ever smoked? If you have, have you stopped?
S: No.
T: OK. It seems that nobody in our class smokes. It's really good. I think you are all clear that smoking is harmful to health. But some teenagers started smoking at very early years.
Discussion: Why do you think they smoke?
S: Cool/Curious/Following others...
T: Now here is a boy named James who became addicted to smoking, and his mother was very worried about him. However, she did not know how to stop him smoking but asked his granddad for help.
T: If you were his granddad, how would you persuade him not to smoke again?
S: .....
T: Let's read and see if his advice is similar to yours.
Get students to know something about smoking.
Serve as a warm-up for the following tasks. Step 3
Fast Reading (8min) Task 1 Skimming (Individual work, 3min)
T: Go through the first two and the last paragraphs and get some useful information.
(Then, I will use PPT structure chart to organize the answers' different level and lead students to get the right answer methodically
and step by step.
Q1. How many parts does the reading text consist of?
Q2. Who wrote the letter to whom?
Q3. Can you guess the purpose of the letter?
Q4. Read the article and find out the suggestions James' grandfather found on the Internet.
Task 2 Scanning (Pair work, 5min)
T: Find out key phrases to conclude the main idea of each paragraph
T: Which paragraph do you think is more important ?
S: Paragraphs 3 & 4.
Reading skills:
How to sort out major and minor details?(区分主次)
Enable students to understand the given material better by using different reading skills
