It has been a long time since Mark Strand died at his daughter's home, aged 80, but people can't stop missing him because of his talent in poetry. He won numerous compliments from critics and a loyal following among readers in his life.
Born in Canada on April 11, 1934, Strand had expressed interest in painting at an early age and hoped to become an artist. However, that interest declined when he studied at Yale, and he then decided to become a poet instead. So after graduation in 1959, he went to Italy and studied the 19thcentury Italian poetry there."I was never much good with language as a child," Strand admitted during an interview for the Los Angeles Times magazine. "Believe me - the idea that I would someday become a poet would have come as a complete shock to everyone in my family."
Strand is known for his precise language and surreal (超现实的) imagery. Absence and loss are common themes for him -just like what he said in his Keeping Things Whole: "In a field / I am the absence / of field./This is / always the case. / Wherever I am / I am what is missing."
