Silent reading

T: After reading "the future of English", we know English is changing all the time. We also say English is colorful. What does "colorful English" mean? Can you guess the meaning?

S: I think "interesting expressions in English" is right.

T: Is he right? Read the passage silently and you will know the answer. There are many new words in this passage and try your best to guess their meanings. After reading, finish Activity 5 on Page 54.

Ask some students to give their answers. Let the students discuss the different answers if necessary.

T: In Activity 2, there are some sentences. Some are topic sentences, but some are not. Can you tell me which are not topic sentences? (1 minute)

Fast reading

T: Please look at Activity 4. The four sentences are taken from the text. First, read the sentences, and then scan the text and decide where they go in the passage. If you are not sure about your answers, have a discussion with the students around you. Let's see who will finish it first.

Three minutes later, do the activities together.

T: Now, you have 3-4 minutes to finish activities 3 and 6. Just complete the sentences in Activity 6 orally.
