Step I Before you start
T: Have you ever heard of Sir Thomas More?
S: Yes. He was an important politician and wrote Utopia which described an ideal society.
T: Good. Sir Thomas More was Henry VIII of England's chancellor between 1529 and 1532. He was executed by Henry for his opposition to the break with the Roman Catholic Church. Utopia was written by Sir Thomas More in 1516. It reflects many contemporary attitudes (e.g. the subsidiary place of women), but its emphasis on democracy and egalitarianism was quite revolutionary.
Deal with Exercise 1. It will help students prepare for listening.
T: Look at the picture of the ideal society of Utopia on Page 36. What can we learn about Utopia from the picture?
S1: We can see that everybody wears the same kind of clothes. A man and a child are playing chess.
S2: Some people are playing games. We cannot tell the rich from the poor.
T: Good. Now work in pairs guessing the answers to the questions in Exercise 1.
Students think over the questions for two minutes.
Then deal with Exercise 2.
T: Well. Next, let's listen to Sir Thomas More's story about Utopia.
Play the cassette twice for students to listen to and check their answers to Exercise 1.
