Dear Jim,
I am glad to hear from you. I am sorry to know that although you have tried your best, there is hardly any improvement in your Chinese. As your friend, I want to give you some advice. First, you should learn words and expressions in context instead of just memorizing them one by one. Second, a real key to learning Chinese well is to use it as frequently as possible. So listen to or watch programs in Chinese each day. More importantly, it is helpful if you can talk with native speakers.
I hope you can enjoy your Chinese study with my advice.
Good luck!
Yours,
Li Hua
