gather:表示把分散的东西集中起来,不仅用于人和物,还可用于抽象的东西,如:力量、印象等;也指:采花、摘果、采蜜等。

e.g. Many passers-by helped to gather the scattered money.

Seeing it would rain, the shepherd gathered his cows and drove them down hill.

Gathering all his strength, the man lifted the boy out of water.

The students are gathering flowers for the festival.

II.重点词语和句型

1、run into:撞上、偶然遇见、跑进、流入

  e.g. The car ran into a tree and stopped.

   She ran into an old friend of hers in the street yesterday.

   The Changjiang River runs into the East China Sea.

   The boy ran into the room and told good news to the family.

run的其它短语:run across:与......不期而遇、跑过、横跨(道路); run after:追赶;

  run away:逃走、逃跑; run out:跑出、结束、用完; run out of:将......用完

run over:(液体等)溢出、(车子等)辗过、匆匆过一遍;

2、such as = such ... as...:......像那样的,as后接名词,表示列举。

  e.g. I have many good novels, such as Red Star Over China, Gone With The Wind, etc.

   She has such good friends as Kate, Jesica, and Anne.

注:1) such ... as ... :像是......的......,as是关系代词,用来引导定语从句。

  e.g. Don't read such books as you don't understand.

   I like such food as is rich in fiber and vitamins

   2) for example: "例如",用于列举句子。

e.g. He is very absent-minded. For example, he will forget his meals sometimes.

3、some day = someday:(表示将来的)总有一天、(表示过去的)有一天 = one day

  e.g. I saw him someday last month in the street.

   My dream will come true some day.

4、happen:发生

1)Sth. happen (to sb.)

  e.g. Something terrible happened (to her) yesterday.

2) Sb. happen to do / be / have done ...:作"碰巧"解。

  e.g. That day I happened to be at home on holiday.

   She happened to have seen the film before.

   The boy happened to know some English and so the problem was settled.

  3) It (so) happened that ... . 碰巧......

   e.g. It so happened that she was ill at home that day, so she survived.

   It so happened that none of us had any money with us.

5、step up:走上楼梯,加快、加速,促进、增加......、改善

  e.g. The first line, please step up.

   For fear of being late, she began to step up her pace.

   You have to step up your efforts to finish the work on time.

 step的其它短语:step on:踩、踏; step aside:站到一边、让路,让工作给某人(for sb)

step down:从(车子等)下来,辞职、下台; step in:走进,干涉、介入; step off
