W: Jack and I went to see the new Jackie Chan movie last night.
M: So did I! I went with Hilary. We must have been there at the same time!
W: Oh,the movie was great, but the whole thing was ruined by those rude people!
M: What do you mean?
W: Didn't you hear those two people talking to each other through the whole movie? They were talking so loud that no one could hear anything! You must have heard them!
M: Umm. Could you hear what they were talking about?
W: Everyone could! One of them was telling a story about how his brother Mike got into trouble. It was so rude! Hey wait a minute. Your brother's name is Mike isn't it?
M: I have to go. I'll see you later.

M: Hi Barbara! Did you and Raymond enjoy Margo's dinner party?
W: No,we didn't. It was awful!
M: What about the food?
W: Oh,the food was disgusting! We hated it. We had Duck and Banana Curry!
M: Duck and what? Ugh!
W: I know. I don't like duck and Ray doesn't like bananas!
M: And their friends? Tell me about their friends. Were they nice?
W: Oh,Bruce! They were friendly but they were so boring! They talked for three hours about their house and their dog and their dishwasher! And they didn't ask one question about us. We said very little only "Yes?" and "No!"
M: Oh dear! What a terrible evening!

When I was a student in the United States,I was invited to spend the weekend with an American family. When I arrived everyone was very well-mannered. They gave me a tour of the house and then showed me to the guest room. They showed me where to put my clothes how to operate the bathroom equipment and even where to find a fresh towel and a new bar of soap. But I was surprised that they did not give me anything to eat. I went to bed very hungry.
I was sure that my hosts did not mean to be rude, but I did not understand the way they acted. When I returned to school I told the story to my classmate Steve. "Didn't they ask if you were hungry?" Steve said.
"Yes but they still didn't give me anything," I answered.
"Well, when they asked you, what did you say?"
"I said 'No,I'm fine.'"
"Well no wonder they didn't give you anything!" Steve said.
"But I was just being polite," I insisted. "I thought they would give me something anyway."
"Maybe that's true in China but not in America," Steve told me. "When Americans ask a question they expect a direct answer. If you say you're not hungry they'll think you really are not hungry."
It is a lesson I'll never forget!
