　　We were on the frontier⑮ and on Christmas morning we stuck up⑯ a board with "A Merry Christmas" on it. The enemy had stuck up a similar one. Two of our men then threw their equipment off⑰ and climbed out of the trench⑱ with their hands above their heads as our representatives⑲. Two of the Germans did the same. They greeted⑳ each other and shook hands\s\up1(21(21). Then we all got out of the trench. Bill (our officer) tried to prevent\s\up1(22(22) it but it was too late so he and the other officers climbed out too. We and the Germans walked through the mud and met in the middle of no­man's­land.

　　We spent all day with one another\s\up1(23(23). Some of them could speak English. By the look of them, their trenches were in as bad a state as\s\up1(24(24) our own. One of their men, speaking in English, remarked\s\up1(25(25) that he had worked in England for some years and that he was fed up to the neck with\s\up1(26(26) this war and would be glad when it was over\s\up1(27(27). We told him he wasn't the only one who was fed up with it. The German officer asked Bill if we would like a couple of\s\up1(28(28) barrels of beer and they brought them over to us. Bill distributed\s\up1(29(29) the beer among us and we consumed\s\up1(30(30) the lot. The officers came to an understanding that we\s\up1(31(31) would celebrate Christmas in peace\s\up1(32(32) until midnight.

　　Just before midnight we all decided not to start firing before they did. We'd formed a bond\s\up1(33(33) and during the whole of Boxing Day\s\up1(34(34) we never fired a shot\s\up1(35(35) and they the same；each side seemed to be waiting for the other to set the ball rolling\s\up1(36(36). One of their men shouted across\s\up1(37(37) in English and asked how we had enjoyed the beer. We replied that we were very grateful\s\up1(38(38) and spent the whole day chatting with them. That evening we were replaced\s\up1(39(39) by other soldiers.
