2. Enable Ss to talk about obligations, using the Modal Verbs like " can, must/ have to".

Step1. Preparation
1. Show Ss a picture of an invitation on TV.
T: Hello, everyone! Yesterday I got an invitation from my dear friend; she invited me to go to her birthday party. But I have something important to do. I'm studying for a test. I don't know what to do. What should I say? Can you help me? ...
2 Collect Ss' suggestions.
Step2. Presentation
1. Present and write the topic of Unit9: Can you come to my party? on the Bb.
2. Present the response to the topic question:
―Sure, I'd love / like to.
―Sorry, I can't. I have the flu.// too much homework to do.
―I'm sorry, I have to / must go to the doctor.// prepare for an exam
3. Present the Modal Verbs: can, can't, have to, must
Tell Ss that these are all Modal Verbs. Can is used to make an invitation in a polite way in a general question. While must/ have to are used to make obligations to turn down an invitation.
Ask students to give their own reasons. Write the target phrases in 1a on the Bb. Have Ss read them aloud.
4. Write down the bold sentences on the Bb. Have Ss read and learn them well.
Step3. Practice of listeng
1. 1b. Ask Ss to look at the picture at P65. Tell them the events about Sun Ning. Sun Ning is having a party on Saturday afternoon. Now he is inviting some of his friends to the party. Can his friends come to his party then. Listen to the recording twice together and write the names next to the correct Ss in the picture. Who is a/b/c/d? Check the answers then.
2. Have Ss read the listening script together. Analyse any hard point for them.
3. Have Ss work in groups of 4 and role play the listening conversations.
