The subject clause

Explain what a subject clause is. Show the following sentences on the PowerPoint.

Thomas made her angry.

That he had even asked her made her angry.

T: Please look at the two sentences. In the first sentence "Thomas" is a proper noun, functioning as the subject of this sentence. In the second the clause "that he had even asked her" is the subject of this sentence. So it is called a subject clause. Now let's rewrite the sentences in Ex 3 on Page 18, using subject clauses.

Suggested answers:

3.1. What we need is some interesting news.

3.2. What people want are pictures on the page.

3.3. What the teacher told me is the truth.

Deal with the other exercises.

T: Please look at this sentence: It's unbelievable that my school life is over. In this sentence the pronoun "it" functions as a formal subject, while the underlined part is the real subject. The pattern "It is/was ... + adj. ..." is very useful. And sometimes, we can use a noun or a v-ed form. So the pattern should be "It is/was ... + adj. / n / v-ed...". Please look at the following sentences from this unit and pay attention to the sentence structures.

Highlight the pattern It is ... + adj. / n / v-ed ... in the following sentences.
