Greet the class as usual.
Play a guessing game: Ask a student to do an action, then ask and answer questions like this:
T: What is he/she doing?
S: He/she is reading/watching TV...
Call some students to do other actions, then have some pairs ask and answer. Explain the structure of the present continuous tense.
Step 2 Presentation
Show a picture of playing basketball and ask:
T: What is the boy doing?
S: He is playing basketball.
Then say: if the action happened at this time yesterday. How can we talk about it?
Help students say: what was the boy doing at this time yesterday?
T: What was the boy doing at this time yesterday?
S: He was playing basketball.
Explain the usage and the structure of the past progressive tense:
Was/were + v.-ing
Show the pictures of doing the homework, reading, going to work, waiting for the bus and shopping.
