The Three Gorges① Dam②
"Walls of stone to hold back③ clouds and rain"
Mao Zedong wrote a poem ④in which he dreamed of⑤ "walls of stone to hold back clouds and rain till a smooth lake rises⑥ in the narrow⑦ gorges". Now his dream has come true⑧. The power of the Yangtze River, which is the world's third longest river⑨,has been harnessed⑩ by the Three Gorges Dam.
The Three Gorges Dam, which is the biggest construction⑪ project in China since the building of the Great Wall and the Grand Canal⑫, has been built to control flooding and provide hydroelectric⑬ power for the central region⑭ of China. The dam is nearly 200 metres high and 1.5 kilometres wide. It is the largest hydroelectric power station and dam in the world and has cost more than any other construction project in history.
