Our planet's diversity of plants and animals has been damaged and it needs protection. But how to protect it?

Scientists across the world have agreed that one of the best ways to protect our planet's diversity of plants and animals is to preserve large unroaded areas and ensure such areas are connected to each other. Protecting and connecting undamaged forests, grasslands and deserts are especially important as our planet warms. Changes in climate are pushing plants and animals northward and higher up in elevation (海拔). If lands are not connected, they become islands, sentencing native plants and animals to disappear as the planet warms.

Removing fences and other barriers are also important to allow wildlife to roam freely. Reestablishing connectivity across or below major roads allows wildlife to roam across historic ranges. On a recent visit to the Canadian Rockies, I was amazed to see a number of wildlife bridges and tunnels cross over and under the fourlane highway. These bridges are being used by bears and elk, and have greatly reduced the accidents that are deadly to animals and people.

In Europe, there are more than 600 wildlife bridges that have reconnected pockets of habitat once isolated by a web of roads, yet much remains to be done to reconnect lands important to the future of many wildlife species on the edge of extinction. In Florida, car collisions (碰撞) remain the numberone killer of Florida panthers (黑豹), an endangered species that is struggling to recover from the edge of extinction. In 2015, car collisions killed 17 panthers, or about 10% of the total population of these big cats.

If we are to protect and restore our world's wildlife, we must first protect unroaded areas and connect landscapes to give wildlife the freedom to roam, find food and raise their young. The goal of protecting our ecosystem diversity is an achievable goal. With good methods and efforts, our ecosystem diversity will be protected.
