Chinese doctors. They thought of treatments like acupuncture as madness.
Task 2 Discussion
T: This unit provides a chance for us to discuss something related to human cloning. What do you think of human cloning? Is it a good or bad thing? Who would like to describe this?
Get students to write down their opinions according to the Speaking Strategies - Avoiding problems on page 42. Get them to report their opinions to the whole class. This part provides the students a chance to get an idea of human cloning and the students are expected to participate fully in order to develop both their language skills and overall abilities.
S1: In my opinion, it's a terrible idea. Although people like the twins, yet the cloned persons aren't really twins. Twins have different thoughts and they are independent while cloned persons have the same thoughts besides the same appearance. It's hard for us to tell one from the other and we can get confused easily. If there were many cloned people in the world, there would be more scientists and criminals as well and the world would be so populous and disorderly that people might not have a feeling of safety---we would be uncertain about something and would be always asking ourselves, "What is the other 'I' doing? Is he cheating? ......"I think we will live a terrible life and every night we will have a horrible nightmare.
S2: I think it is a good thing. You can do whatever you like while the cloned one does whatever you dislike. When you are busy you can get your own clone to help you. Your own clone can share your happiness and sadness and you will have a very close friend who is faithful to you, cares about you and looks after you. Isn't it a very good thing?
The teacher must make sure that each student has a chance to express their opinions.
