The African Union (AU) is the second important union among countries after the setting up of the European Union, which combines politics, economic, and military together. Its main task is to safeguard and promote peace as well as stability, to carry out reform strategies to reduce poverty of the African continent.
Africa has the poorest economic status in the world. And the wars there have never stopped for quite a few years. The population in Africa occupied 10 percent of that in the whole world while the total amount of economy income there takes charge of only 1 percent of that in the world. In Africa, more than 20 million people lack of basic nutrition for a long period of time, and the illiterates there can reach as many as 70 percent of the population. What's more, the number of people infected with AIDS and HIV virus is close to 25,000,000. As the statistics of UNHCR indicates, by the beginning of the year 2003, the number of refugees in the world reaches 10,300,000, of which 3,300,000 is in the charge of Africa. In the 49 countries which are declared as the least developed countries by UN, 34 are in Africa.
As a new region union of the African continent, the AU has tried its best to remove poor districts, to accelerate economic development, and to safeguard peace on the continent, devoting itself to building up a unite Africa.
