T: Now look at Activity 2. Work in pairs and discuss the questions. Three minutes for you.

Three minutes later.

T: Time is up. The first one, is the neighborhood safe?

S: The neighborhood is not safe. Because it said it was a rough neighborhood.

T: Ok, the next one, why don't people try to help Oliver?

S: Because they are cold-hearted.

T: Yes, the last one, where does the man take Olive?

S: He took Olive to the place where the thieves live.

T: Let's listen to the passage to check your guess. OK?

Step IV Listening

Give the students several seconds to scan the instructions and the questions in Activity 3. Make sure they know what to do. Ask them to make some notes while listening.

T: When you scan the questions, I am sure you can get some information related to the

listening material. It can help you to understand the passage more easily. Now let's

listen to the tape.

After listening, check their answers in class. Then deal with Activity 4.

T: I will play the tape again. Listen carefully and decide who says the statements in the table. Only when you understand the characters of the people in the novel, can you give the right answers. This time, you should put you emphasis on the
